  • Designed a proposal for a national foodborne illness health registry to assist researchers in studying the long-term health outcomes related to foodborne diseases

  • Petitioned USDA to secure a co-operative agreement between two U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Agencies and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
  • Conducted U.S. Senate and House of Representatives’ briefings:  Data Sharing Issues Regarding Microbiological Testing Results from Meat and Poultry Products, May 21, 2007; Washington, D.C.
  • USDA responded to the data-sharing petition in August 31, 2007, ending USDA- Agricultural Research Services’ exclusive use of the Salmonella isolate data.  Cooperative agreement stipulated that ARS would share the Salmonella data with USDA/Food Safety Inspection Services (FSIS), which in turn, would share the data with CDC’s PulseNET.
  • Presentations:  ConAgra Food Safety Council, Consumer Federation of America Conference, IAFP’s 95th Annual Conference, Kansas State University Grace Shugart Lecture, Marler-Clark Conference, Who’s Minding the Store?, National Environmental Health Conference, National Restaurants Association Conference and other presentations
  • Provided input to U.S. Government Accountability Office (GAO) which resulted in the GAO listing food safety as one of the 13 “Urgent Issues” facing President-elect Obama and the 111th Congress

  • Department of Labor, Health and Human Services (LHHS): Healthy People 2020’s plans to delist food safety as a category;
  • USDA:  Proposal to use N-60 as the mandatory sampling methodology  for E. coli 0157:H7 testing
  • USDA:  Proposal to use low dose, low penetration, e-beam irradiation on beef carcasses
  • USDA:  Resolve Report – Review of a proposal for USDA to adopt a risk-based food inspection system
  • FDA:  Opposed proposal to change of FDA’s “zero tolerance” standard for Listeria monocytogenes in FDA-regulated food
